The wholesale destruction of Panama's rainforests is proceeding at an increasingly rapid rate, resulting in widespread soil erosion. The Panama Canal is silting up with soil washed down from deforested areas. In addition, large numbers of rare bird and animal species are under threat. There are international protests over plans for the expansion of the massive Cerro Colorado copper mine.
